The Goal

Persuade audiences with radical and unique logic and defeat an opponent through pirate games.

The Outcome

The first triumph of the defensive team I participated in.
A presentation in which I played a major role and a speaker made audiences' in-depth empathy and interest.

The Process

‌About the Workshop

Pirate Boot Camp provided a game of two teams which attacked or defended an assigned project by PXD (UX consulting agency) in order to build skills up, collaborate and enhance a way of thinking.

‌Organization

Four women including me became a defensive team and heard that
“NO VICTORY for defensive teams until now, unfortunately.”

Besides, the assigned project - UX consulting for premium user's manuals of feature phones was done seven years ago. We lost where we should start.

‌Preparation: Research & Insight

First off, the mission of my team was to explore the background of the project and environments in 2007
to empathize its aim and approach.

- WHY -
LG invested in manuals?

706 devices had been released, and
LG ranked second with the market share at 23%.
Premium phones more than USD 600 were introduced.

- HOW -
other manuals were like?

They consisted of technical words and
 bookish expressions.

- WHAT -
happened then?

iPhone 3G was released in 2008 and a game changer.
It sounded a death knell for feature phone and manuals.

Hence, questions came to our mind:
"The persona as housewives in their 40s was inappropriate?”
“They really did not need manuals for smartphones?"

We conducted phone interviews with four mothers ‌having the same characteristics the persona had and found out below

•They indeed needed easy manuals for smartphones.
•They were worried to buy expensive smartphones because using ‌them seemed intricate.
•Although it had been one year since they bought a phone, they relied on technicians or children to learn a new feature.

We were sure that manuals were ‌in demand and wanted to verify the theory.

We discovered numerous examples - manuals on mobile apps which had the same principles the project pursued.

‌Presentation

The aim of the presentation was to make audiences being absorbed in it and empathize our theory with actual proof, participation, and joy.

‌Debating and Evaluation

Thanks to the fine approach and the well-organized presentation,
my team led the discussion completely and overwhelmed the attacking team.

“For the first time, the defending team won with the unanimous consent of three judges.”
